What you need for this experiment

  • A bowl
  • A drinking glass
  • Water
What to do

  1. Put the glass into the water and turn it upside down.
  2. Lift up the glass but without the rim going above the surface of the water.
Observation Noted

The level of water in the glass rises, so that this is higher than the water outside the glass.

Why

The pressure of air on the surface of the water in the bowl pushes the water up into the glass.

Take away

Air exerts a pressure of force on all surfaces with which it comes in contact.
